Our roots began in 1981 as the Montrose Clinic, with specialization in HIV education, testing, and treatment. Since then, the agency has expanded to >50 clinics in Houston, one in Baytown, two in Beaumont, and one in Deer Park with extensive services that include: Adult primary care, HIV/AIDS care, pediatrics, OB/GYN and maternity, dental, vision and behavioral health. Job Description
The primary responsibility of the Technician, Pharmacy is to assist the pharmacist in the preparation, filling, and delivery of medications and other tasks associated with dispensing. Participates in ensuring that the daily operations of the pharmacy and quality checklists are met to minimize any interruptions in service. Provides daily leadership to ensure that the work is accomplished timely and safely.
Essential Functions

- Assists the pharmacist in ensuring the appropriateness of medication doses by obtaining and entering patient information as necessary.
- Ensures the patient receives correct medication by using appropriate dispensing procedures.
- Maintains adequate stock of medication and supplies, uses safety precautions when stocking; ensures proper filling techniques are used when preparing medications.
- Re-establishes priorities based on workload.
- Ensures insurance adjudication and pre-authorizations are processed in a timely manner.
- Completes and properly documents Daily and Monthly Activity checklists including expired drug checking, cleaning, area inspections, ordering as assigned.
- Ensures appropriate counseling time is offered to patients and document when refused.
- Communicates with referring physicians’ offices or insurance companies as supported by procedures or requested by pharmacists.
- Performs weekly controlled substance cycle counts and documents as appropriate.
- Participates in education of new employees.
- Participates in education and training of pharmacy employees and for organizational needs, ie pharmacy openings, immunizations, World Health Day, National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
- Provides positive customer service by interacting with customers according to the Legacy Community Health Employee Handbook; when assisting clients at the cash register.
- Communicates with customers and co-workers with respect and courtesy, avoiding loud and disruptive conversation and/or remarks indicating disrespect.
- Participates in hand-off communication when beginning and leaving your shift.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Notifies Pharmacist, Manager, Pharmacy of any problems that go unresolved so that attention to the problem can occur; and understands the urgency of follow up when necessary.
- Disseminates any information (drug shorts, availability, pricing, timely to the pharmacists and peers.
- Tracks and provides information regarding non-stock requests and recommendations for par adjustments.
- Participates in interim and annual physical inventories.
- Runs reporting tools as necessary to support tracking and ensuring medication adherence.
- Supports the Manager, Pharmacy Operations in activities necessary to ensure the implementation and changes associated with the 340b program inventory integrity.
- Maintains prescription files according to policy and procedure; completes filing daily.
- Collects cash as appropriate and performs daily procedures for money collections.
- Reconciles prescription fills against billing.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, community and the general public.
- Must be able to perform duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Demonstrate project management skills and understanding of 340b regulations, inventory management and managing a cash register.
- Ability to remain calm under stressful conditions.
Education & Training Experience Requirements
- Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Must have a current Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certificate or Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) certificate.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Must be registered with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
- Must be able to pass a math test pertinent to retail pharmacy activities.
- Computer experience – Windows, Excel, and Accounting software.
Work Experience Requirements
- Must have two (2) years healthcare experience.
- 1+ years community pharmacy preferred.
- 1+ years pharmacy logistics preferred.
- Must maintain required certifications.
- Pass criminal background check.
- Pass drug test.
- Bilingual preferred.
