Pharmacy Technician Per Diem

Houston, TX - Contracted

Position Summary: 
The primary responsibility of the Per Diem Technician, Pharmacy is to assist the pharmacist in the preparation, filling, and delivery of medications and other tasks associated with dispensing. Participates in ensuring that the daily operations of the pharmacy and quality checklists are met to minimize any interruptions in service. Provides daily leadership to ensure that the work is accomplished timely and safely. This position is on an as-needed basis, offering flexibility in scheduling and the opportunity to work in a fast paced, patient focused environment. Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Maximum of 30 hours per week.

Essential Duties & Functions:
  • Assist the pharmacist in ensuring the appropriateness of medication doses by obtaining and entering patient information as necessary.
  • Ensure the patient receives correct medication by using appropriate dispensing procedures.
  • Maintain adequate stock of medication and supplies. Use safety precautions when stocking. Ensure proper filling techniques are used when preparing medications.
  • Re-establish priorities based on workload.
  • Ensure insurance adjudication and pre-authorizations are processed in a timely manner.
  • Complete and properly document Daily and Monthly Activity checklists including expired drug checking, cleaning, area inspections, ordering as assigned.
  • Ensure appropriate counseling time is offered to patients and document when refused
  • Communicate with referring physicians’ offices or insurance companies as supported by procedures or requested by pharmacists.
  • Perform weekly controlled substance cycle counts and documents as appropriate.
  • Participate in education of new employees. Participate in education and training of pharmacy employees and for organizational needs, i.e., pharmacy openings, immunizations, World Health Day, and National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
  • Provides positive customer service when interacting with customers and assisting clients at the cash register.
  • Communicate with customers and co-workers with respect and courtesy, avoiding loud and disruptive conversation and/or remarks indicating disrespect.
  • Participate in hand-off communication when beginning and leaving your shift
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Notify Pharmacist and Pharmacy Manager of any unresolved problems that go unresolved. Follows up when necessary.
  • Disseminate relevant information and updates (i.e., drug shorts, availability, pricing) to peers and Pharmacists in a timely manner.
  • Track and provide information regarding non-stock requests and recommendations for par adjustments.
  • Participate in interim and annual physical inventories.
  • Run reporting tools as necessary to support tracking and ensuring medication adherence.
  • Support the Pharmacy Operations Manager in completing activities necessary to ensure 340b program inventory integrity.
  • Maintain prescription files according to policy and procedure. Complete filing daily.
  • Collect cash as appropriate and perform daily procedures for money collections.
  • Reconcile prescription fills against billing.
  • Respond to Patient Messages: Monitor and respond to patient messages in the pharmacy system, ensuring timely and accurate communication to address patient inquiries and concerns.
  • Central Fill Pharmacy Duties: Assist with the central fill pharmacy processes, including the preparation and coordination of large volume medication dispensing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Certifications, Licenses, & Training (minimum requirements):
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Graduate from an accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program is required.
  • Current Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certificate is required.
  • Current registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Must be able to pass a math test pertinent to retail pharmacy activities.
  • Current BLS /CPR certification is required
Desirable Education and/or Experience:
  • Two (2) years of previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician is preferred.
  • One (1) or more years of experience in community pharmacy is preferred.
  • One (1) or more years of experience in pharmacy logistics is preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements): 
  • Excellent communication skills and customer service skills. Ability to communicate effectively with staff, community, and the public.
  • Ability to perform duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Project management skills and understanding of 340b regulations, inventory management and managing a cash register.
  • Ability to remain calm under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong typing and computer skills, including Windows, Excel, and accounting software.
  • Above average organizational skills.
  • This job requires access to confidential and sensitive information, requiring ongoing discretion, secure information management, and professionalism.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:
  • Bilingual preferred.
Physical & Mental Demands: 
  • Frequently required to sit; occasionally required to stand and walk.

Work Environment:
  • May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including viruses.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • May work in open area at times and be exposed to various distractions
